The Smiths, arguably one of Britain's most influential rock groups of the eighties, were founded in late 1982. Over the course of the next few months, the group acquired a fanatical following thanks to iconic frontman Morrissey and their idiosyncratic stageshows. They rejected a deal with Manchester's own Factory Records (home to Joy Division and New Order, among others), and signed with London's Rough Trade Records instead.
